The Music Connection Between Happiness And Work

The Benefits of Listening To Music At Work

Picture found on Musclemixes.comWhen working in Southern California, I spent most of my day driving from one appointment to the next.  My office was my car.  No matter what was happening outside my mobile office, I could sit, drive and listen to music.  This would help me to calm down from the stress of my job, or life or I could throw on some fun tunes to pump me up for a big meeting.  Lately, I’ve been out of sorts.  Trying to get back into my groove if you will.  I have turned to music.  This got me to thinking: What are the benefits of listening to music while at work?

I began to research, and this is what I discovered.  Those who listen to music at work have the following symptoms compared to those who did not listen to music.

They are:

  • More productive
  • Happier
  • Calmer
  • More focused
  • Have improved memory
  • Increased Endurance
  • Demonstrate better work habits
  • Are less distracted

For the most bang for your ear drums (you should excuse the expression!), listen to music with no words.  Music for meditations, Jazz or classical music will work best.  There’s also an option to mix it up – listen to Beethoven for 55 minutes, then throw on your favorite upbeat music for a five minute boost.  Repeat throughout your work day.

(This post is dedicated to my mentor and business partner, Robert Shields, Jr.  Music is one of his many joys in life.)
